AERA's Division K focuses on research on teaching and on teacher development and education from preservice through professional induction to the in-service stages of teachers' careers. The primary purposes of the Division K Graduate Student Council are to: 1) increase awareness and communication among fellow graduate students within Division K; 2) disseminate valuable information pertaining to research and activities surrounding the AERA Annual Meetings; 3) promote the production and sharing of high-quality, cutting-edge research within the field of teaching and teacher education; and 4) encourage positive learning experiences for graduate students in Division K.

Norma Valenzuela currently serves as Division K's Senior Graduate Student Council Representative. Valenzuela is a third year Doctoral student in the Cultural and Curricular Studies emphasis area at Chapman University in Orange, California. She is a Teacher on Special Assignment at an elementary school in Santa Ana, California; she works with parent educational programs that foster personal growth and positive discipline. Valenzuela is very interested in Latina activism, voice/identity as well as self-empowerment, and culturally responsive pedagogy.
