 2014
Philadelphia		  Philadelphia Urban Creators
- a Youth-Led Organization Bringing Equitable & Sustainable Solutions to North Philadelphia Neighborhoods -
This year the AERA Graduate Student Council will partner with Philadelphia Urban Creators (PUC), a grassroots youth organization using an innovative model of social change to create healthy and sustainable environments within the urban landscapes where they reside. Winners of Mobilize.org’s 2013 reGenerate Philly Summit Awards, PUC currently runs a variety of initiatives focused on urban innovation in North Central Philadelphia, including a fully-operating urban farm. Their group seeks to unite, educate, energize, and empower Philadelphia youth to become passionate leaders in the movement to transform blighted urban landscapes into models of community-based sustainability through community organizing, service-learning, artistic expression, and urban agriculture. Following an orientation and tour, we will work outdoors alongside members of PUC to help support their mission. 
2013
San Francisco		 Beautifying Compass Facilities to Provide Homes and Shelter to San Francisco Families
This year we partnered up with COMPASS (http://compass-sf.org/), a non-profit organization that has been a part of the San Francisco community for ninety years. Today, Compass helps provide families the tools they need to achieve long-lasting stability and self-sufficiency. We worked with this organization to help them to continue to serve the San Francisco community by helping them with a beautification project of their facilities including preparing living areas or new families entering the program.
2012
Vancouver		 "Take it to the Wall" Community Mural Project
In response to this year’s conference theme, Non Satis Scire: To Know Is Not Enough, the AREA GSC is partnering with the SAME (Surrey Appreciates ME)Project to paint a community mural
that is designed by Surrey School District 36 students and mastermuralist Michelle Loughery. This project will encapsulate the mission of the SAME project—to engage youth as mentor-leaders in community contexts while emphasizing anti-racism, belonging, diversity and inclusion. It will provide AERAparticipants asignificant opportunity to have informal conversations with high school students from the Vancouver area’s largest school district. Such conversations may provideAERA participants deeper insightinto the Surrey and Vancouvercontexts and allow students tocontribute and take significant pridein their community while workingalongside AERA participants toprovide a lasting legacy to the Cityof Surrey.
2011
New Orleans		 GSC Partners with New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (NOAHH)
Habitat for Humanity was an overwhelming success with graduate students and their friends and family members. Volunteers arrived a day early for the 2011 annual meeting in New Orleans, to engage with the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (NOAHH) program in their effort to provide homes for families who experienced the devastating effects of hurricane Katrina. This energetic group of volunteers collectively provided over 230 hours of labor as they worked on two Habitat houses being built in the hard hit lower 9 ward. In addition, this group also donated $500 to NOAHH to help defray the cost of materials and supplies. Several participants commented that this event renewed their spirits and provided a useful lens to think more deeply about the 2011 theme Inciting the Social Imagination: Education Research for the Public Good. We all agreed this year’s event was an overwhelming success on many levels and well-worth repeating in Vancouver. A special thank you goes out to the following Community Service Project coordinators and organizing committee members: Robin Harris, Patrick Bell, John Wolcott, and Robyn Carlson.
