Welcome to the Bilingual Education Research SIG!

The Bilingual Education Research Special Interest Group is a thriving and growing community of scholars who engage in research and related activities concerning the theoretical, programmatic, pedagogical and political conceptualizations for bilingual education and bilingualism in formal and non-formal settings around the world. While "bilingual" is one of the words in our name, members  in the SIG contextualize bilingual education research issues in bilingual, multilingual and increasingly globalized settings. Among us are scholars from a range of disciplines who draw on a vast array of methodologies to deepen understandings of bi(multi)lingualism and education in bi(multi)lingual contexts.

As incoming chair, I am excited about the contribution of our members to the vigorous conversations about the issues we care about and their connection to a mission that echoes the topic of our 2016 AERA theme: "Public Scholarship to Educate Diverse Democracies" particularly in the current political and economic climate and important shifts in social and citizen participation across the globe.

I look forward to continue the collaborations and mentoring with past and new SIG officers who are contributing to the success of our SIG. I am grateful to Kate Menken (Past Chair and current Elections Committee Chair) for her service and mentorship and to Melinda Martin-Beltran for her continued service to the SIG (Secretary/Treasurer). Also I would like to welcome Sue Hopewell (Program Chair) and Audrey Figueroa Murphy (Parlimentarian). Thank you to Kara Mitchell Viesca (Webmaster) for your return to service for the SIG!

Be sure to check our website for updates and provide feedback!
