Arne Duncan and Leading Scholars to Discuss Key Issues with
More than 14,000 Education Researchers at AERA Annual Meeting

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 7, 2013 – U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan and the field’s leading scholars will meet with more than 14,000 education researchers at the 94th Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (April 27 – May 1) to examine the major issues and challenges facing students at all levels of education, educators, policymakers, and other stakeholders.

In an hour-long session titled “Choosing the Right Battles: Remarks and a Conversation,” Secretary Duncan will give a major talk on K-12 student assessment and then take audience questions. (Duncan is speaking 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. PDT, Tuesday, April 30. Questions are limited to AERA members.)

In addition, prominent scholars and other national voices will discuss the latest research on, and emerging trends in:

  • Student assessment
  • Equity in higher education
  • Immigrant education
  • The role of education schools/colleges in education reform
  • For-profit education and low-income students
  • School safety and bullying
  • Early education
  • Technology and learning
  • The role of social media in reducing poverty
  • And other key issues
