WASHINGTON, D.C., April 2 – Journalists interested in broadening their understanding of education data have until April 5 to apply for a week-long fellowship co-sponsored by the American Educational Research Association and the Education Writers Association. Reporters and editors will have the opportunity to attend a data workshop, which is timed to allow fellows to also attend sessions at AERA's 2013 Annual Meeting in San Francisco and EWA's 66th National Seminar at Stanford University.
In a joint workshop April 30 - May 1, AERA and EWA will offer education reporters a training opportunity to learn about the breadth of large-scale education data sets; data resources that they can use at their desk; and how to use and access data tools. The seminar faculty will include top scholars known for their use of major national and international data sets as well as their statistical and methodological savvy. Also, through this workshop and related activities at the AERA conference, journalists will gain a deeper appreciation of how to use publicly available data, and how to access researchers with relevant expertise.
Participants may then continue with a data-training track at the EWA National Seminar May 2-4. Sessions will look at the data on charter schools, explore gaps in students’ opportunities to learn, and examine how reporters can use data drawn from public opinion polls.
AERA will cover the cost of rooms April 29 and 30, and will reimburse airfare and mileage on personal vehicles. EWA will reimburse reporters for hotel May 1-4.
To apply, fill out this brief form on EWA’s website.
