AERA Names Juliane Baron Director of Government Relations
WASHINGTON, D.C., September 19, 2014 – The American Educational Research Association (AERA) has named Juliane Baron as its new Director of Government Relations. She begins her position on October 1. As Director of Government Relations, Baron will lead AERA’s education and advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill and with federal agencies, serve as advisor to the Executive Director, and play a strategic role with committees and coalitions that deal with research funding, research policy, and education.
Since 2006, Baron has served as Deputy Director of Government and Public Affairs for the Population Association of America and the Association of Population Centers. Prior to that, she was Deputy Director of the Social Policy Action Network from 2001 to 2004 and Director of the Population Resource Center from 2005 to 2007. For three years, Baron served as a legislative staffer in the Texas House of Representatives, followed by a two-year stint as Associate Research Scientist and Project Manager of the Welfare, Families and Children: Three City Study, a multi-investigator study housed at Johns Hopkins University. She received a BA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in International Relations and her MPAff from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas. Her masters’ work focused on anti-poverty policies. “Juliane is an excellent addition to our team,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. “She brings exceptional representational and advocacy skill and considerable experience in social science and in legislative affairs. She will represent quite well AERA’s interest in advancing research and research policy priorities.” AERA’s previous Director of Government Relations, Gerald E. Sroufe, will continue to work with the organization as a senior advisor on special projects.
