For Immediate Release

WASHINGTON, February 4, 2013─ The American Educational Research Association (AERA) is proud to announce the publication of the International Handbook of Research on Environmental Education, a volume aimed at educators, researchers, policy makers, and students to help create better understanding of environmental issues. This book is published by Routledge Publishers on behalf of AERA.

“A comprehensive volume on research on environmental education could not come at a better time, when the world is fast realizing how essential it is to expand education and enhance literacy about the environment,” observed AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. “This cross-disciplinary volume identifies the scholarship that can and should undergird debate of environmental issues such as climate change, conservation, and sustainability.”

Robert B. Stevenson, James Cook University, Australia; Michael Brody, Montana State University, USA; Justin Dillon, King’s College London, United Kingdom; and Arjen Wals, Wageningen University, The Netherlands, edited the new volume.

The editors state that “the purpose of the handbook is not only to illuminate the most important understandings that have been developed by environmental education research, but also to critically examine the ways in which the field has changed over the decades, the current debates and controversies, what is still missing from the environmental education research agenda, and where that agenda might be headed in the future.” The International Handbook of Research on Environmental Education offers an assessment of the substance and robustness of the knowledge base and provides a foundation for advancing thinking of scholars and students about future directions for environmental education research.

The new Handbook is an international effort, consisting of 51 chapters written by scholars who represent six continents and 15 countries.

Order information and the Research on Environmental Education table of contents, with a listing of chapter topics and contributing authors, are posted on the AERA website.
