November 2013

Commissioner Sean P. “Jack” Buckley has announced that he will leave the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) in January. Buckley will become senior vice president for research at the College Board.

Buckley was appointed by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate in December 2010, for a term expiring on June 21, 2015. He will be leaving after three years of federal service as commissioner, but 18 months short of his full term.

Buckley served as NCES deputy commissioner from 2006 to 2008. As commissioner, he has provided important leadership in national and international data collection and enhancement of state longitudinal data systems. He has helped to guide federal grants for expansions of state longitudinal data systems and benchmarking of the Nation’s Report Card tests to the Trends in International Science and Mathematics Study, in addition to overseeing The Condition of Education’s digital formatting. Between his stints at NCES, Buckley was an associate professor of applied statistics at New York University.

Since coming to NCES, Buckley has reached out to the education research statistics and data community. He has provided annual reports at the AERA Annual Meeting on the state of education statistics and data and the ongoing work and plans of NCES. He has also made himself accessible to early career scholars as a presenter and participant in professional development institutes and sessions held by AERA and other scientific organizations.
