AERA to Publish Three New Books

AERA will publish three books in April with groundbreaking scholarship in critical emerging areas of education research.

Two of the volumes, Socializing Intelligence Through Academic Talk and Dialogue and Interest in Mathematics and Science Learning, emerged from AERA Education Research Conferences. The third, LGBTQ Issues in Education: Advancing a Research Agenda, stemmed from an AERA research initiative.

All three books will be available at the AERA exhibit booth at the 2015 Annual Meeting in Chicago. Online pre-ordering is now available. E-book editions will be published this summer.

“I could not be more pleased that AERA is producing these volumes under its own imprimatur,” said AERA Executive Director Felice Levine. “Each volume fulfills AERA’s goal of serving as a publisher of books of importance to the education research community and to practitioners and policy makers interested in education research.”

Socializing Intelligence Through Academic Talk and Dialogue, edited by Lauren B. Resnick, Christa S. C. Asterhan, and Sherice N. Clarke, focuses on a fast-growing topic in education research. Over the course of 34 chapters, the contributors discuss theories and case studies that shed light on the effects of dialogic participation in and outside the classroom. This rich, transdisciplinary endeavor will appeal to scholars and researchers in education and many related disciplines, including learning and cognitive sciences, educational psychology, instructional science, and linguistics; it will also appeal to teachers, curriculum designers, and educational policy makers. 
   
Interest in Mathematics and Science Learning, edited by K. Ann Renninger, Martina Nieswandt, and Suzanne Hidi, is the first volume to assemble findings on the role of interest in mathematics and science learning. As the contributors illuminate across the volume’s 22 chapters, interest provides a critical bridge between cognition and affect in learning and development. This volume will be useful to educators, researchers, and policy makers, especially those whose focus is mathematics, science, and technology education.
   
LGBTQ Issues in Education: Advancing a Research Agenda, edited by George L. Wimberly, examines the current state of the knowledge on LGBTQ issues in education and addresses future research directions. The editor and authors draw on existing literature, theories, and data as they synthesize key areas of research. Readers studying LGBTQ issues or working on adjacent topics will find the book to be an invaluable tool as it sets forth major findings and recommendations for additional research. Equally important, the book brings to light the importance of investing in research and data on a topic of critical educational and social significance.
   

Books published under the auspices of AERA and its publishing program meet the quality standards of the Association based on peer review. These publications reflect the views of the authors and editors, and not necessarily those of AERA or its governing Council.
