July 2013
Teresa L. McCarty and Harold O’Neil, the two new editors for the American Educational Research Journal (AERJ), began reviewing manuscripts on July 1, and will become editors of record for a two-year term beginning in January 2014. McCarty is the new editor of the Social and Institutional Analysis (SIA) section of the journal, while O’Neil has taken over the helm of the Teaching, Learning, and Human Development (TLHD) section. McCarty and O’Neil have taken on editorial duties at a pivotal and exciting time for the journal. In 2016, AERJ will become an integrated journal without the two-section division. Looking toward 2016, both McCarty and O’Neil see their editorships as opportunities for the two sections to work together on topics and special issues. Over the next two years, readers should expect to see some cross-pollination between the subject matter typically seen in the two sections. “It is a privilege and an honor to lead one of the premier education journals in the world,” said McCarty, an AERA Fellow. “Recognizing that this editorship comes at a critical moment in the journal's history and on the cusp of AERA's centennial, my team looks forward to this opportunity to move AERJ forward in ways that capitalize on diverse perspectives and strengthen the place of social-institutional analyses in the field of education.” Also an AERA Fellow, O’Neil said he is “honored to be chosen to lead one of AERA’s flagship journals,” and is looking forward to implementing the TLHD vision. McCarty is currently the George F. Kneller Chair in Education and Anthropology in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, and is joined by an editorial team of Susan Faircloth, Gene Glass, James Ladwig, Stacey Lee, Stuart McNaughton, Laurence Parker, and Sofia Villenas. O’Neil is Professor of Educational Psychology and Technology at the University of Southern California's Rossier School of Education, and is joined by an editorial team of Zenaida Aguirre-Muñoz, Li Cai, Richard P. Durán, Robert Rueda, John Sweller, and Brendesha Tynes. AERJ is the third-ranked journal out of 216 peer-reviewed journals in the 2012 Journal Citation Reports (JCR), Education and Educational Research category. It publishes original empirical and theoretical studies and analyses in education that constitute significant contributions to the understanding and/or improvement of educational processes and outcomes. The journal’s SIA section focuses on significant political, cultural, social, economic, and organizational issues in education, while the TLHD section explores the processes and outcomes of teaching, learning, and human development at all educational levels, and in both formal and informal settings.
