July 2012

On June 14, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed the FY 2013 appropriations bill for the Departments of Labor, Education, and Health and Human Services at essentially the same level requested by the Obama administration. The committee appropriated $618.7 million to the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), an increase of $25 million, or 4.2%, over FY 2012. The distribution of funding among the IES programs is shown in the table below.

IES funding in recent years has been appropriated through continuing resolutions, which have, for the most part, maintained level funding for programs. This is the first formal bill for funding the Department of Education to be passed in the FY 2013 appropriations process.

Whether and when a 2013 appropriations bill passes this congressional term remains uncertain. This bill is not expected to be brought to the Senate floor at this point. The House Appropriations Committee’s Subcommittee on Labor, Health, and Education has not yet begun to draft its bill.
