Games for Learning: An Evidence-Based Approach

Sylvia Scribner Award Address

Rich Mayer, University of California – Santa Barbara, addressed the topic of “Games for Learning: An Evidenced Based Approach.”  He examined the value added approach, taking a close look at which features increase the instructional effectiveness of a computer game. He also examined the cognitive consequences approach and what is actually learned from an off-the-shelf game. Finally, he took a close look at the media comparison approach, addressing the question of whether people learn better with games than with conventional media.
