Today's Highlights
AERA Open Business Meeting
8:15 to 9:45 a.m.
Hyatt, West Tower - Gold Level - Toronto
The AERA Open Business Meeting provides a time for AERA members to discuss important issues regarding education
research and the work of AERA. Members are encouraged to attend this meeting convened by AERA President Joyce E. King.
Justice Requires Informed Action: Fighting Anti-Intellectualism with Educational Research
10:35 a.m. to 12:05 p.m.
Hyatt, East Tower - Gold Level - Grand EF
Session will also be live-streamed
Chaired by Patricia A. Alexander (University of Maryland), presenters—W. James Popham (University of California, Los Angeles), Gale M. Sinatra (University of Southern California), Angela Valenzuela (The University of Texas at Austin), Zeus Leonardo (University of California, Berkeley), and Catherine A. Lugg (Rutgers University)—will address the assumption that research endeavors will be embraced in policy and instruction; however, it is often the flashiness of the message rather than the soundness of the evidence that
is heard and acted upon. This session will discuss the two-fold challenge for those vested in the pursuit of justice through and in education.
Culture, Language, and the Politics of Forgetting: Beyond Restrictive Language Policies in Education
12:25 to 1:55 p.m.
Hyatt, East Tower - Gold Level - Grand EF
Session will also be live-streamed
Chaired by Ruben Donato (University of Colorado Boulder), presenting speaker Antonia Darder (Loyola Marymount University) and discussant João Menelau Paraskeva (University of Massachusetts) will critically examine the inextricable relations of power that exist between culture, class, and language within the context of classroom practices. Central to this discussion is unveiling the
epistemicides that accompany practices of language in education and the need to embrace a decolonizing and emancipatory political project of schooling and society.
Preparation for Inclusive Education in the Era of High-Stakes Teacher Education Accountability: Mapping the Territory for New Directions in Theory and Practice
2:15 to 3:45 p.m.
Hyatt, West Tower - Gold Level - Regency AB
Presenters Dianne L. Ferguson (Chapman University), Marleen Carol Pugach (University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee), Scot Danforth (San Diego State University), and Srikala Naraian (Teachers College, Columbia University) will frame the work of inclusive education researchers in the current teacher education accountability context and address the significance of this context when it
comes to preparing teachers to work with students from historically marginalized groups, including students with disabilities.
Black Education: 10 Years Later
8:15 to 10:15 a.m.
Hyatt, West Tower - Gold Level - Hong Kong
Co-sponsored by the World Education Research Association and the Social Justice Action Committee.
In 2005, AERA published
Black Education: A Transformative Research and Action Agenda for the New Century
. Chaired by Kofi Lomotey (Western Carolina University), participants—Carol D. Lee (Northwestern University), Hassimi Maiga (The Academy for Diaspora Literacy, Inc.,), Petronilha Beatriz Goncalves e Silva (Federal University of Sao Carlos), Beverly Lindsay (University College London), and Jerome E. Morris (University of Georgia)—will provide a summary of this work and begin the discussion of next steps, including a companion piece reflecting on these issues more than a decade later.
