We’re excited about the 2016 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. The theme is “Public Scholarship to Educate Diverse Democracies,” and we will also be celebrating AERA’s Centennial: 100 years in 2016. Our Program Chair, Kathy Mills, has crafted a dynamic set of sessions for the conference, and we hope to see you at more than one of them. As we gear up for the conference, our Communication Team, led by Anna Smith, is producing a series of podcasts called Writing and Literacies On Air. The next episode has guests from community-based projects in Ohio and New York and it considers how we can put the "public" front and center in our "scholarship." A big thank you to Jon Wargo, one of our volunteer social scholarship coordinators, who has led this effort.
Please also join us for our Business Meeting on Saturday, April 9, 6:15-8:15 (at the Marriot Marquis, Level Two, Marquis Salon 1). In addition to conferring the 2016 Steve Witte Lifetime Achievement Award and the (new) 2016 Outstanding Graduate Student Paper Award, we have an exciting presentation: “Making the Road by Walking: Conversations with Dominic Wyse, Marjorie Orellana, and sj Miller about trans*ing creativity and love in writing & literacies research.” If you’re a prospective member, please join our community: Add to our newsletters, learn from your colleagues, make new connections, present your work! We look forward to hearing from prospective and current members through our social media outlets as well on Twitter at @writinglit and on Facebook in the AERA Writing & Literacies SIG group. See you in DC, Jessica Zacher Pandya Writing & Literacies SIG Chair [email protected]

This award shall be presented to a senior scholar who has made significant contributions to research in the area of writing and literacies. Nominations must include a letter from the nominating party explaining the significance of the nominee’s work, the nominee’s Curriculum Vitae, and a recent published article, book chapter, or book. Nominations are due 12/21/15 to Laura Apol, Chair, Writing & Literacies SIG Awards Committee: [email protected].
In an effort to complete our SIG historical records and fill in a few unknowns, the AERA Writing & Literacies SIG is asking members for information about past winners of the Steve Cahir Award & Steve Witte Award.
If you received or you know someone who received either of these two awards from the SIG, please email our current SIG Historian, Robert LeBlanc at [email protected] with the name of the awardee and the year.
