This year the Hispanic Research Issues SIG under the leadership of our Program Chair Dr. Tina Reyes is proud to include a symposium featuring Rebecca M. Callahan and Patricia C. Gandara's new edited book. Please see below. We look froward to seeing everyone.
Reyes L. Quezada, Chair Hispanic Research Issues SIG Professor University of San Diego
Mon, April 20, 8:15 to 9:45am, Swissotel, Event Centre Second Level, Montreux 3
Session Type: Invited Speaker Session
Abstract
This session describes findings from the new edited volume The Bilingual Advantage: Language, Literacy and U.S. Labor Market. The volume provides compelling evidence, contrary to prior studies, that fluent bilingualism yields a real advantage in the labor market as well as in college going. This is especially true for Latinos "with immigrant roots," though advantages are found for all bilinguals. The findings of these studies make clear that the real "pay off" for society is not in English only or transitional bilingual instruction but for maintenance bilingual education that develops fluent and literate bilinguals.

Discussants
I hope you are all doing well! I have just been in contact with Gerald Sroufe, AERA Senior Advisor regarding commemorating and celebrating our Colleague Richard Ruiz's life and impact. Richard as well as other colleagues who have recently passed away will be recognized at one of the AERA Awards luncheons through an electronic scroll with their names and picture. The AERA program was already set for this year and therefore a commemorative session could not be arranged for this year. Therefore we will honor his memory at the start of our business meeting that has been scheduled for Fri, April 17, 6:15 to 7:45 pm, at the Swissotel, Event Centre Second Level, Montreux 1& 2. However, at next years AERA conference in Washington DC I have request a Commemorative Memorial Session. Mr. Sroufe has informed me that the session will not count against one of our Hispanic Research Issues SIG sessions, and there is no cost.
At the commemorative session an individual/s will have an opportunity to address Richard's legacy. I will keep you informed as I meet with the Hispanic Research Issues SIG Executive Board to further discuss the celebration and commemoration of our colleague Richard Ruiz.
Thank You and we look forward to seeing everyone at our business meeting. I will be sending an email in the next few days that will pertain to our business meeting and the date of our Pachanga.
