AERA Teams With L. Erlbaum to Publish New Handbook Series in Education Research

WASHINGTON, March 9, 2005—The American Educational Research Association (AERA) and Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc. (LEA), have agreed to publish a new series of books on education research, tentatively called The AERA/LEA Research Handbook Series. The first volume is anticipated to be published in 2007.

This Research Handbook Series will be a top priority on the agenda when AERA’s newly appointed Books Editorial Board holds its initial meeting March 11 and 12 in Washington, D.C.

AERA will develop the substantive content of the books, while Lawrence Erlbaum will handle production, marketing, distribution, and fulfillment in both print and electronic formats. AERA and LEA plan to have three or four books in this series, and volume editors along with participating scholars will prepare original chapters for each one.

“AERA is committed to excellence in its book publishing program, and the new volumes will enhance and extend AERA’s contributions to the book publishing world and to practitioners and policy makers interested in education research,” states AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine, in announcing this project. “This joint venture for a Research Handbook Series with Lawrence Erlbaum Associates will produce valuable volumes for the larger education research community. Education researchers already are very interested in contributing to it.”

Lane Akers, vice president (editorial) of Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc., explains that “research handbooks now are in great demand, and that the initial phase of this series will include as many as four volumes. This partnership with AERA strengthens and intensifies our research publishing program in the field of education.”

Book projects and editors for volumes in this new series will be selected by AERA’s Books Editorial Board. The new volumes will meet the Association’s quality standards based on peer review and will receive the same professional review as other books published by AERA, Dr. Levine notes.

Cherry Banks of the University of Washington, Bothell, chairs the Books Editorial Board. Other editorial board members include Patrick Forsyth, Oklahoma State University; Carl A. Grant, University of Wisconsin, Madison; Felice J. Levine, American Educational Research Association; Gary J. Natriello, Teachers College, Columbia University; Lorrie Shepard, University of Colorado, Boulder; Ana Maria Villegas, Montclair State University (NJ); and Carol Camp Yeakey, Washington University, St. Louis.

According to AERA President Marilyn Cochran-Smith, “The AERA books publishing program aims to publish affordable works that advance knowledge, expand access to significant research and research analyses and syntheses, and promote use.” As a former chair of AERA’s Publications Committee, she is committed to the AERA books program.

On behalf of AERA, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates will publish two additional books in 2005—BLACK EDUCATION: A Transformative Research and Action Agenda for the New Century and STUDYING TEACHER EDUCATION: The Report of the AERA Panel on Research and Teacher Education. Other recent books, published solely by AERA, are the 1,296-page Handbook of Research on Teaching, 2001, now in its fourth edition; and Ethical Standards of the American Educational Research Association: Cases and Commentary, 2002.

The American Educational Research Association represents approximately 22,700 educators who conduct research and evaluation in education. Founded in 1916 and based in Washington, D.C., AERA offers a comprehensive program of scholarly publications, training, fellowships, and meetings to advance educational research, disseminate knowledge, and improve the capacity of the profession for serving the public good.

Founded in 1973 and headquartered in Mahwah, N.J., Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc. (LEA) now publishes and distributes books, journals, software, and alternative media, internationally. Its four major programs concentrate on the fields of psychology, education, communication and communication disorders, and management and organizational studies. Within each of these fields LEA publishes a full range of textbooks, professional and reference books, scholarly books, and journals. www.erlbaum.com
