2013 AERA Annual Meeting - San Francisco Tours

AERA is pleased to offer all Meeting attendees a wonderful selection of tours. Make the most of your visit to San Francisco and take one of the tours! Space is limited for these tours, and interested attendees are encouraged to register in advance. Registered participants wishing to add courses, off-site visits, or tours can log in to add events to your registration. There are 6 different tour times to choose from and 4 different tour options with 2 of the tour options offered twice.

Login here to register and make a hotel reservation or view and add events to your existing registration for the 2013 Annual Meeting. Once you are logged in, click ‘My AERA’ at the top of the page. On the ‘My AERA’ page, scroll down to the 2013 Annual Meeting and click ‘Register and Make Your Hotel Reservation Now’ or ‘View and Add Events to Existing Registration’. Once you are in registration, click on the 'visits/tours tab' and add this event to your cart.

Description:

A short ferryboat ride from Pier 33 delivers you to Alcatraz, the infamous former federal prison; home to the likes of Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly and Robert “The Birdman” Stroud, the subject of many books and a Hollywood favorite.

Discover some of the prison’s true stories. The National Park Service presents a captioned orientation video with historical footage, self-guided walks, exhibits and interpretive talks on topics such as “Famous Escapes.” Also featured is an amazing, award-winning audio tour in the prison Cell House with actual interviews of former guards and inmates.

Only one and a quarter mile from the sights and sounds of one of the world’s most beautiful cities, Alcatraz features some of the most spectacular views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. From lighthouse to prison, the legendary island has acquired a rich history that makes it San Francisco’s most popular tourist attractions!

Note:  This tour involves considerable walking and some negotiation of small steep hills and steps. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.

Experience one of the wonders of the world with an invigorating walk across the Golden Gate Bridge.  At three miles long (down and back) the renowned landmark connects San Francisco to Marin County.

Completed on time and under budget in 1937, this architectural and engineering marvel is one of the largest single span bridges ever created.  Painted world recognizable ‘orange vermilion,’ this nearly 900,000 ton structure has been acclaimed one of the world’s most beautiful bridges.

One of the most photographed sites in the world, the Golden Gate and its famous Bridge is sure to take your breath away. Remember to bring your camera!

Note:  This is a walking tour that involves considerable activity and some negotiation of small steep hills and steps. Dress for the weather, expect wind and wear comfortable shoes.


Tour 4: Majestic Muir Woods and Sausalito

Description:



Scenic Marin County is considered one of the world’s most beautiful spots. From the spectacular Golden Gate Bridge north to Sonoma County, Marin has reserved over one third of its land for parks and preserved open space. The 550-acre Muir Woods boasts redwood trees hundreds of years old and hundreds of feet high. Ferns, wild flowers, and redwood burls make the cathedral-like valley a fascinating environment for a self-guided walk.

Next, the Mediterranean atmosphere of Sausalito beckons you. This former fishing town and quaint artists’ colony is perched on the edge of the San Francisco Bay. Its winding streets are lined with fine restaurants, elegant shops, and wonderful art so take time to grab some lunch and explore Sausalito’s many boutiques. The stunning view of San Francisco from across the water makes for wonderful photographs - so bring your camera!

Note:  This tour involves minimal walking on some uneven ground surfaces. Dress comfortably and in layers. A light jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are great accessories to bring along due to changing weather patterns. Comfortable outdoor shoes are recommended.
