Outstanding Publications Competition for 2016

Important Links for the 2016 Outstanding Publications Competition:

The purpose of the competitions is to recognize, honor, and share exceptional work that increases our understanding and contributes to the practice of applied research, evaluation, assessment, and accountability in our nation’s school systems. While many of us are engaged in similar work within similar settings, this competition provides an opportunity to learn from the diverse methods, applications, and approaches we use.

Excellence will be recognized in each of 5 entry categories listed in the table below.
Use the links listed in the 3rd column to access the criteria that will be used to evaluate submissions in each category.

We depend on our members to review submissions. We are currently recruiting members to serve as reviewers for the 2015-2016 competition. The work will involve reviewing between 1 and 5 submissions during January and February 2016. If you are interested in being a reviewer, please indicate your interest by completing the following brief survey:

Additional Information Regarding Submissions for Outstanding Dissertation

Graduate Students:

To be eligible for this award, dissertations must have been written between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2015.

The Award:  Division H recognizes up to three outstanding dissertations, depending on the quality of submissions. The top entry receives $1000.

Focus: Dissertations/theses must be developed and approved by a graduate school program and must specifically address a study in applied research, evaluation, assessment, or accountability within a school setting. Each entry must include a 10-15 page summary of the study.  The rating form for this category will guide you as to what your summary should include.  Additionally, each entry must be accompanied by a 1-2 page transmittal letter from a committee member indicating the attributes, which the advisor believes are most noteworthy in recommending the paper for this honor.

We strongly encourage submissions in this category. In addition to the fact that this category offers a monetary reward, in the past, competition has been much higher in the other publication categories. By making this submission, you are giving AERA Division H permission to distribute a copy of your publication on the division website.

Submission of Entries

Stacey Merola and Rachel Durham will be coordinating the work of the Outstanding Publication Competition Committee.  You will need to submit an electronic copy of your submission, any supporting material, and the submission form to Stacey and Rachel at [email protected].

Electronic copies should include the following information:

  • 2016 OPC Submission form in MS Word format. Save the file using this naming convention: OPC Cat X Submitter Name.doc; such as: OPC Cat 1 Jane Doe.doc.  Submit it as a WORD document.  Do not scan it.
  • Electronic copies of all documents (reports, essays, brochures, etc.) in MS Word or PDF format.  (For dissertations, include the 10-15 page summary instead of the entire dissertation.)
  • Electronic copy of PowerPoint
  • If applicable, include additional special material noted within the category requirements in MS Word or PDF format.
  • For the Dissertation/Thesis category also include a 1-2 page transmittal letter from a committee advisor or member in MS Word or PDF format
  • For versions in media format send a link, if the material is available on the internet.  If not, contact Dale at [email protected] to determine how to effectively post the materials.

By making this submission, you are giving AERA Division H permission to post a copy of your submission on the Division H website.  No more than five submissions may be made by a single person, agency, institution, or school district.

It is VERY important to include the name of a contact person.  All materials are to be emailed on or before Friday, January 15, 2016 and sent directly to the Division H Outstanding Publication Competition Committee Chairperson, Stacey Merola, as detailed above.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Stacey at (703) 447-7883 or Rachel at (410) 516-4936 or by email at [email protected]
